Sierra Foothills Trip 2006
Research is lots of fun, especially when done in the field. We had the pleasure of seeking out first hand information about the Sierra Foothills to see where the grapes grow up to become great wines. This is a huge region with so many excellent vineyards and wineries. We spent time in the El Dorado AVA, in Fair Play AVA and in CA Shenandoah Valley AVA/Amador County and took in only a sampling. We wanted to search out opinions of "Old Vines," and "Old Clones." We heard about Higgins Clones, Deaver Clones, OGP-Old Vines (Original Grand Pere Old Vines) Zinfandel (pictured). We learned about Rhone varietals in the Foothills. I have a new favorite --- the big surprise was Sierra Foothills Cabernet Sauvignon (more about that below in How Great Wine is Created - Terroir). We were introduced to Mission Vines that predate Zinfandel in California having been brought from South America by Franciscan Monks in the late 1770's. Some Mission Vines in the Sierra Foothills date back to the mid-1850's. We can't leave out the Italian Varietals flourishing in Amador County. This is NOT an exhaustive study of the region since this would take months and we only had a few days. Read on for more about our trip.
Some Zinfandel Old Vines in Amador County are 100-130 years old - truly old vines! |

How Great Wine is Created - Terroir
White Wine disclaimer - I admit that we are red wine lovers. However, we very much liked the Voignier and Sauvignon Blanc and some lovely Pinot Gris of the Foothills. These do tend to show classic characteristics of the varietals though we have little first hand experience with these types. We will correct this soon. Stay tuned.
Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon - - - Vines + Granite and/or volcanic rock = pepper and spice + cherry fruit!!! These are among the dominant characteristics of the red wines of the Sierra Foothills. To fine tune your spicy preference, think of a scale from north to south with the spice predominating in El Dorado and moderating in Amador but that spice is always there. The El Dorado cooler climate intensifies and brings the spice forward. This has a surprising effect on some varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon which isn't generally noted for its spiciness. The Terroir seems to exchange Cabernet's characteristic current/cassis tendencies for spice. On the other hand, the warmer climate of Amador brings jammy fruit character forward with a spicy chaser.
Mission Vines
These vines at Story Vineyards and Winery are more than 100 years old. Mission Vines were brought to California by Franciscan Monks in the 1770's. The wines produced by these vines are light bodied with subtle flavors. Most often the juice is used for blending to create dessert wines.
The Table's Color Scheme Below:
We visited El Dorado, Fair Play, CA Shenandoah Valley and Amador County vineyards and wineries. Summaries of the visit are in the works. The vineyards and wineries we visited are highlighted in the darker color. We learned a lot and wished that we had more time to follow up on the many good leads we received. We thank all of those who were so generous with their time to answer our questions.

If you go, North Yuba will be a quick tour since Renaissance Vineyard and Winery is only winery in North Yuba. The AVA is in the northwestern region of the Sierra Foothills. The vineyard is located at an elevation of 1,700-2,300 feet. This is a steeply sloping terraced vineyard that produces estate bottled wines. The soil is a mixture of decomposed granite and volcanic subsoil, clay and ash. Microclimates provide enough acres that produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and many more varietals.

The El Dorado AVA is a year round wine tasting destination and the award winning Zinfandel produced here make it a top choice for Zin lovers. The county of El Dorado has two wine regions, El Dorado AVA and Fair Play AVA, with their own unique geology, soil types and elevation: The El Dorado AVA region in the north has an elevation from about 2,000 feet to 3,600 feet. The soil is composed of crushed volcanic rock. The Fair Play AVA region in the south has an elevation from 1,200 feet to about 2,500 feet. The soil here is unique being composed of decomposed granite. The vineyards in these two regions benefit from their higher elevations which put them well above the fog line and allows for long, sunny days tempered by cool nights. Both regions are made up mostly of small, family wineries, which focus on small batches of single vineyard estate wines.

In the Fair Play AVA there are 19 wineries that are part of the Fair Play AVA and they are all family owned, and they are located within a 5 mile radius of one another. The Fair Play Region is 2,000 - 3,000 feet above sea level giving the growing season long, warm days and cool evenings. Soils are deep, decomposed granitic sandy loam and produce distinctive and intense wines. The topography is responsible for a variety of microclimates which contribute to the wide diversity of wine varietals. Here we will focus on the wineries that produce Zinfandel. Visit the wineries' websites for more information including events, maps and for their lists of the other varietals they grow. While Zinfandel was most certainly originally grown in these foothills more than 100 years ago, Prohibition and other factors resulted in its disappearance from the appellation. Zinfandel vineyards were started again 25 years ago from clones of old vines from the Sierra Foothills AVA. This is a particularly fine location to explore local Zinfandel terroir because of the concentrated clustering of wineries and because of the unique granitic sandy loams of the region.
Classic Fair Play Zinfandel starts out with flavors of dark cherry and raspberry followed by clove and pepper spice. The aromas are of blackberries and plums.

The Fiddletown AVA is part of Amador County and is located at an elevation between 1,500 feet and 2,500 feet. Zinfandel is the primary grape grown in the appellation. The wineries listed below with the ** beside their names, are not technically within the Fiddletown AVA but these wineries use 85% of the grapes from the region allowing them to legally use the Fiddletown AVA on their label. Wineries entered in a lighter color do not feature Zinfandel.

The CA Shenandoah Valley AVA is the newest Sierra Foothills appellation and it is located in Amador County. The designation comes because of geographic and historic reasons. Does the name sound familiar? It was named by settlers from the east after the Virginia Shenandoah River Valley from which they came. Shenandoah is north west of Fiddletown and north east of Plymouth in Amador County. The soil is well drained decomposed granite, sandy loam and clay. The elevation is around 1,100 feet. Summer temperatures can be very warm, ranging from 80 to 100 degrees.
Classic CA Shenandoah Valley Zinfandel has aromas of rich cherry and raspberry and pepper spice. The wines are characteristically dense and jammy with flavors of black plums and blackberries touched by cardamom, nutmeg and cumin spices followed up with hints of mocha.

Amador County is not itself an American Viticultural Area but it does contain and share regions as described below. The elevation is 2,00-3,000 feet but Amador has relatively warm summer days and the typical foothill cool evenings which prolongs the growing season. The soils are loam and/or sandy loam. The California Shenandoah Valley (settled by former Virginians) and The Fiddletown Appellation are part of Amador County. The wines produced in the Fiddletown AVA have less alcohol and more refined fruit character. Fiddletown AVA's elevation is between 1,500-2,500 feet. A * marks the wineries below that are part of the Fiddletown AVA. Wineries listed with in the lighter color do not feature Sauvignon Blanc. Many of Amador's wineries farm organically. Amador shares the California Shenandoah Valley AVA with El Dorado County and the Amador wineries that fall within that jurisdiction have the letters: "CA SV" at the end of their addresses. Because of the overlap, you will find many of these vineyards and wineries listed in the AVAs described above.

Calaveras County, home Mark Twain's jumping frog. Calaveras County is the southern most region of the Sierra Foothills and the vineyards lie at an elevation of 1,500 to 2,400 feet. The county has the distinction too of being at the northern edge of Yosemite National Park. French and Italians settled here during the gold rush so that Rhone and Italian varietals predominate in the region.
